Spanish FA chief noncommittal on VAR

Spanish FA president Juan Luis Larrea does believe goal line technology should be introduced but did not commit to implement the VAR system.

The 64-year-old appeared to be reluctant when it came to the costs of introducing VAR – the system used in all other major European leagues – and suggested other alternatives may be suitable.

“Referees can’t possibly see everything and we should help them where possible,” Larrea told reporters, as quoted by Marca.

“The league in Spain has been made to look very silly on the global stage due to these high-profile errors.

“We are trying everything possible to bring in the technology required for football next year, this is not necessarily VAR as we believe Hawk Eye would be sufficient.

“Being a referee is a very difficult job and big mistakes can happen but I cannot comment if these mistakes mean officials should be suspended or not.”
