La Liga: No rush over VAR technology

La Liga is not planning to implement video assistance review (VAR) this season despite growing calls for the technology, they have confirmed.

The Spanish league is planning on bringing in the system next season but many wanted this process speeded up after Lionel Messi’s shot which crossed the line on Sunday’s clash with Valencia was not awarded.

It is the only one of Europe’s top five leagues not to use goal line technology and this stems from a dispute over its organisation and payment between La Liga and the Spanish FA.

The news followed the confirmation that despite plans, Atletico Madrid’s second leg Copa Del Rey clash with Elche this week would not contain video technology.

It is possible that the system will be used in a later round in the Copa this season.
