Sevilla have confirmed reports that Coach Eduardo Berizzo has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will be undergoing treatment for the illness.
Sevillainfo.es broke the story during Sevilla’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday, and Marca claimed the club refused to deny it.
“The medical services of Sevilla FC report that the Coach of the first team, Eduardo Berizzo , has been diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the prostate,” read a Sevilla statement.
“The future examinations will lead to a decision regarding which are the steps to follow regarding their treatment.
“Sevilla FC wants to show their full support for our Coach right now and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
Reports had circulated the information was broken to the players at half during the encounter, at which point Los Rojiblancos were trailing 3-0 before bouncing back to draw 3-3 in a stirring comeback.
Sevilla’s players were also seen coming together once the final whistle had blown at Sanchez Pizjuan, in an apparent show of unity for their Coach.
Athletic Bilbao defender Yeray Alvarez has spent the past year battling a similar form of the disease.
