Simeone downplays Griezmann drought

Diego Simeone claims that if Atletico Madrid have 23 points from 11 games and Antoine Griezmann isn’t in form, then ‘it’s a good sign.’

Griezmann hasn’t netted for his club since the end of September and was substituted in Atletico’s 1-0 win at Deportivo La Coruna, with the Coach questioned about the France international at the post-match Press conference.

“I see that we haven’t lost in 11 League games, that we have 23 points, that Valencia only drew with us at home, that Barcelona only drew with us,” Cholo pointed out, AS reports.

“We’re a competitive team. Griezmann is a great player on our team. I think about the positive things. If we have 23 points and Griezmann still hasn’t scored, that’s a good sign.”

Simeone was asked if the win at Riazor would be a ‘turning point’ for his team in the title race, and he congratulated his side on recovering the midweek disappointment against Qarabag.

“It’s clear that you’re in a better position for winning. It’s clear we have to improve, but we have to follow the path of the Villarreal game, the second half of Qarabag, the Sevilla game,” he argued.

“For all that effort we get better, because football pays you back and we have a very committed team. When you see men play as they did after the blow we received on Tuesday, I’m proud of them.”
