Atletico Madrid midfielder Augusto Fernandez is on the cusp of returning for the first time in 13 months after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The 31-year-old was an unused substitute for Diego Simeone’s side during their 1-0 victory at Celta Vigo – his former club – on Sunday afternoon after sustaining the injury in September 2016.
It was the third match this season in which the Argentine was named in a matchday squad for Los Rojiblancos, alongside the trips to Girona and Qarabag.
“He is much better, he is recvoered and working well in training,” Simeone told reporters.
“He had the chance of playing, he is enthusiastic and we need him back, he will play soon.”
Augusto could play his first game in over a year on Wednesday when Atletico travel to Segunda B side Elche in the Copa Del Rey.
