Perez: Officiating must improve

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has called for greater transparency and a higher standard of officiating in Spain.

The head of Madrid, who was elected for a fifth term unopposed earlier this summer in his role, referenced De Burgos Bengoetxea's in the Spanish Supercopa clash with Barcelona as evidence changes were needed.

“It is not right that we often end up talking about the performance of the referee,” Perez told El Larguero on Cadena Ser.

“The whole establishment (of officiating) can obviously be improved and it’s even more important with everyone around the world watching.

“There are matches when the officials do not match the standards of play, we must work to improve this as all mistakes must have consequences, including for referees.

“How do referees win promotion? How are they judged? There is a lot of mystery when there needs to be more transparency.

“VAR is fundamental as it would take away discretion of the officials and it would help decision-making improve.

“Transparency and technology will benefit football – I am in favour of technology, and also for more experienced referees to match the occasion.”
