Anderlecht in for Vermaelen?

Belgian champions Anderlecht have been linked with a move for out-of-favour Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to reports.

Diario Sport cite a report in Belgian newspaper Dernier Heure which states the 31-year-old could return to his native country where he has never previously played professionally.

The Belgian giants need to strengthen their defence after losing Bram Nuytinck to Udinese while Kara Mbodji has also been linked with a move away.

Former Arsenal man Vermaelen made just 21 appearances in his first three seasons with Barca due to constant injuries and endured similar issues at Roma last term.

However, he has featured for the Catalans in preseason, even turning out in their 3-2 against Real Madrid.

Vermaelen, who still has two years left on his Barca contract, has also been linked with West Brom, Watford and Crystal Palace, the latter of whom are now coached by former Blaugrana defender Frank de Boer.
