Spain’s women out of Euros

Spain's women were unexpectedly knocked out of Euro 2017 on penalties last night after a goalless draw with Austria.

Following a stalemate over 120 minutes of the quarter-final tie, Jorge Vilda's side were beaten 5-3 on spot-kicks, with Sarah Puntingam scoring the decisive penalty.

It meant that La Roja, who began the tournament in the Netherlands as one of the favourites, were eliminated having failed to score in three of their four matches played.

"We tried everything," Vilda commented following the defeat. "We knew the great opportunity we had before us, but I don't blame any one of my players.

"We need to correct errors in order to be better but this tournament has served us in order to learn a lot of things."

Austria move on to face Denmark in the semi-finals, with the hosts set to face England in the other last four encounter.
