Torres signs one-year Atleti extension

Fernando Torres has signed a one-year contract renewal with Atletico Madrid in what is likely to be his final season with the club.

The 33-year-old had been heavily linked with a move away from La Liga and last month reports emerged of several Mexican clubs with strong interest, but he has ended speculation.

Torres returned to the Vicente Calderon in January 2015 having first left seven-and-a-half years earlier, but has scored only 28 goals since as he has played a bit-part role.

"I am very happy to continue one more year together,” read a statement from Torres on Atleti’s website.

The former Spain international is behind Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro in Diego Simeone’s first choice strikers list, while Luciano Vietto and Diego Jota have both returned to the club after loan spells.
