Madrid defenders return to fitness

Real Madrid defenders Raphael Varane and Pepe look set to return to the squad for their Champions League semi final second leg clash with Atletico Madrid.

Varane and Pepe have recovered from hamstring and rib injuries respectively to bolster Zinedine Zidane’s defensive options, with Nacho Fernandez likely to be preferred at right-back ahead of Danilo, in the absence of Dani Carvajal.

"Nacho is a centre-half, but can play anywhere in defence and do very well," Zidane told his pre-match press conference.

"Pepe is very good, we will see if he is in the squad. Raphael has trained without any problems so they are big boosts for us."

Madrid lead Atletico 3-0 from the first leg, with the winners advancing through to meet Juventus in this season's Champions League decider in Cardiff on Saturday June 3.
