Celta Vigo midfielder Marcelo Diaz will miss between four and five weeks with a knee ligament injury sustained against Villarreal.

The Chilean international, who has become an integral part of the Galicians since joining from German side Hamburg last January, went off injured during Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Roberto Soldado’s header.

“The medical tests carried out on Monday to Marcelo Diaz reveals that the midfielder suffers a grade II sprain of the lateral ligament internal of the right knee,” read a Celta statement.

“The injury occurred during the course of the league clash between Celta and Villarreal.

“Celta's medical services estimate the player will be out in about four or five weeks.”

The 30-year-old will now miss Eduardo Berizzo’s side’s Europa League return leg against Krasnodar on Thursday alongside the league fixtures against Deportivo, Las Palmas, Valencia and Eibar, while he’ll also miss Chile’s World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Venezuela.
