David Villa has paid tribute to his former Spanish international teammate Xabi Alonso, who has announced he will retire at the end of the season.
The pair were part of the Spain squad to win the 2008 and 2012 European Championships alongside the 2010 World Cup, and Villa – currently at New York City – has thanked him for his friendship and helping him personally.
“He was my teammate in the national team and I’m little bit surprised because he’s good and doing very well with Bayern Munich,” explained Villa.
“But he decided this and I say thank you, not only for being my friend but also my teammate in football and for what he has achieved throughout his career.
“Thank you so much for growing football with your ability and attitude.”
