Zidane hails Madrid ‘response’

Zinedine Zidane hailed the “response” given by his Real Madrid players during Saturday’s 4-1 win against Eibar.

Karim Benzema’s first La Liga goals since January, plus strikes from James Rodriguez and Marco Asensio, marked a resounding return to form for Madrid and moved them back atop the table for at least a few hours.

“It was a very good response from the players, we started very well, we scored three goals in half an hour…” the Coach said after the game.

“We knew we were playing on a difficult pitch, but we played in the opposite half of it, we scored… We had a serious game, always respecting our opponents.

“Benzema? I’m happy for his performance, goals and link-up with the other two [attackers].

“I’m happy with the game he had, but for him to get the ball, the others had to play very well too, and they did so.

“I’m happy with our response. During a season, there are all kinds of moments.

“A team can’t always play well, but we played very well today, with intensity.

“We started with a lot of rhythm and that’s very important, but [between now and the end of the season] is very long.

“Asensio? He had a great game. It’s not easy when you don’t play a lot, but he played as if he did every three days. I think he’s very happy for his goal and the game he had.

“Modric? It’s not common that [the fans] applaud away from home, but he played very well.

“Luka’s a very important player for us. He controlled spurts of the game very well, knew when to slow down and speed up…

“He’s a key player for the team, and off the pitch, as a person, he’s spectacular.

“He’s very professional, and not because I say so. So do his colleagues, who love him very much.”
