Antoine Griezmann hailed the “brilliant” Kevin Gameiro after Atletico Madrid’s 4-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen and was “proud” to make history during the game.
Griezmann became Atleti’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League with 13 goals on Tuesday at BayArena, where his strike partnership with fellow Frenchman Gameiro also caught the eye.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” he said after the game, UEFA’s official website reports.
“We wanted to win, we did that and the return leg will be difficult as tonight was.
“I’m proud to become part of Atletico’s history with my goal and hopefully I can carry on making history here.
“They pressured us and made life difficult, but the boss's changes helped us win the game tonight. We have a big game to play now in front of our own fans.
“Gameiro? He is brilliant, I get on really well with him. He and Torres both scored and hopefully they can carry on that way.
“Gameiro has set me up seven times and I’ve given him three or four, we have a good understanding and the fact he’s French also helps.”
