Diego Godin has expressed his regret in an apology for being involved in a recent spitting incident with Alaves forward Deyverson.
The incident occurred at the end of a scoreless La Liga draw on 28th January.
TV footage appeared to show the Brazilian spitting into the face of Godin, who then reacted by spitting back and amidst a scuffle between the two sets of players, no punishment was taken by the officials at the time or with retrospective action.
"There is no justification for what happened," Godin told El Larguero.
"It is not an excuse that I had already been spat at two or three times. I am very sorry, as I imagine the other player is too. It hurts me for the image given to all the children.
“I always try and give a good example to children who follow me. I apologise to all those kids who had to see that and not understand it."
