Striker Araujo to join AEK Athens

Las Palmas striker Sergio Araujo is set to join Greek side AEK Athens on a loan deal until the end of the season, say Spanish reports.

Cadena Cope report the Argentinean striker will join the Greek giants imminently after being told being allowed to leave ‘to turn his life around’ by boss Quique Setien.

The 24-year-old was given a nine-month suspended prison sentence and banned from driving for two years in November after being found guilty of drink-driving, but was arrested last week for reportedly drink-driving again.

Araujo began his career with Boca Juniors but made only 19 appearances for his boyhood club, having loan spells at Barcelona B and Tigres before a season-long move to Estadio Gran Canaria in 2014-15, where his 23 goals helped them win promotion back to the top flight of Spanish football for the first time in thirteen years.

He has failed to replicate that form since, scoring seven times in 41 La Liga appearances across a season-and-a-half with Los Amarillos.
