Abelardo leaves Sporting

Sporting Gijon have announced they have parted ways with manager Abelardo Fernandez following the club’s poor run of form.

The Asturian club have lost nine of their last ten fixtures in all competitions, winning only once in thirteen attempts, and are now mired in a relegation battle.

Abelardo had been part of the coaching set up at El Molinon since 2012, firstly as assistant manager, then as boss of the B team before finally taking charge of the first team in May 2014.

With the backdrop of administration and a ban on signings, the former Barcelona defender led Sporting to a remarkable automatic promotion the following year, before – perhaps even more dramatically – ensuring they avoided relegation on the final day of the 2015/16 season with a win over Villarreal.

The early frontrunner for the job is Rubi, who most recently coached at  Levante but left the club after their relegation in May.
