Victor: Betis fans essential

Victor Sanchez has vowed to rebuild “essential” bridges with Real Betis fans and reinstate Ruben Castro as the side’s No 9.

Poyet’s unsavoury relationship with supporters and decision to not only play Castro as a left winger but also drop the veteran sharpshooter for two of Betis’ last three games are widely considered the reasons behind his dismissal and Victor’s subsequent appointment.

“I arrive at Real Betis with tremendous enthusiasm and all the motivation in the world to enjoy one of the best sets of fans,” the new boss told Los Verdiblancos’ official website.

“I’ll look to do so through his team, to compete and engage with the Betis fans, that they are proud of what they see on the pitch.

“The communion between the team and Betis fans is essential, as shown throughout the club’s history.

“When Ruben and I were at Depor, we called him ‘El Pistolas’ [guns] because he could shoot quicker than Billy the Kid.

“That’s a story from a dressing room in which Ruben faced fierce competition from Makaay, Tristan and Pandiani.

“He didn’t get the minutes he needed, but he’s gone on to become what he is today at Betis. He’s very important to us for his seniority and talent.”
