Aritz Aduriz made history for Spain in Saturday’s 2-0 win against FYR Macedonia as he became his country’s oldest-ever goalscorer.
Aduriz came off the substitutes’ bench at the age of 35 years, nine months and a day to round off a 2-0 victory for Spain over Macedonia, and the Athletic Bilbao striker subsequently expressed his “pride’ at the recognition he was receiving.
“I’m proud to be here at my age, I’m enjoying myself and pleased with how things are going,” he said after the game.
“I always do my best to help the team, at least by trying. I always try, sometimes it’s for better or worse, but my work is always there.
“We found it difficult to break the deadlock, it’s not easy when they defend against you so far back.
“We’re satisfied, the three points were necessary, we have a great team. We missed some important players, but those already here are at a very high level.”
