‘Spain players disturbed by poison’

Former Spain boss Vicente del Bosque has claimed that “there was poison from the outside which disturbed the dressing room”.

Del Bosque guided Spain to World Cup and European Championship glory in his first two major tournaments but suffered a group-stage exit at Brazil 2014, which was followed by elimination from Euro 2016 in the last 16.

“There was poison from the outside which disturbed the dressing room,” he said after he was made an honorary member of the University of Salamanca’s alumni association on Saturday.

Del Bosque then touched on the three buzzwords that marked his Spain reign.

“As a Coach, I always tried to conjugate three verbs: choose, feed and compete,” he added.

“We always wanted to choose the best, regardless of birthplace or which club they came from.

“We wanted to feed them with good training and encounter success and disappointment in the competition.”
