Godin suffers ligament damage

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin sprained the ligaments in his left ankle in his side’s 1-0 win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The Uruguayan once more put in an exemplary performance at the heart of the Atletico defence to prevent Robert Lewandowski and his teammates from finding the net, but his injury now appears likely to rule him out of his side’s weekend clash with Valencia and the forthcoming internationals against Colombia and Venezuela.

The club confirmed after the match that the 30-year-old had suffered the injury and further tests would be carried out.

"After a first exploration from the medical services of the club, Diego Godín suffers a sprain of the lateral ligament of his left ankle," a club statement said.

"Additional tests will be performed in the next hours and is pending evolution."

He now looks set to miss Atletico’s trip to Valencia on Sunday ahead of the international break.
