Zidane: Ronaldo subbed for his benefit

Zinedine Zidane has moved to downplay talks of a rift between him and Cristiano Ronaldo after he was subbed off against Las Palmas.

The French coach took the decision to take off the Portuguese star with twenty minutes remaining at Estadio Gran Canaria with Los Blancos leading 2-1, before eventually drawing the game.

“I don’t understand it but at the end of the day that’s what it is – I took the decision for the player’s benefit,” explained Zidane ahead of his side’s game in Dortmund.

“What we talked about after the game will stay there and it won’t change anything.

“Everyone is talking about it more than the Las Palmas game or the match against Dortmund.

“We know it is like this and we have to live with the situation.

“We are calm, I am not dumb and Cristiano is clever, we are here for the same goal both for us and for everyone.”
