‘Asensio has earned Madrid stay’

Zinedine Zidane confirms Marco Asensio has earned the right to stay at Real Madrid for the new season after his wonder strike against Sevilla.

Asensio was preferred to James Rodriguez in Madrid’s attack for their European Super Cup clash with Sevilla on Tuesday and needed just 21 minutes to fire Los Blancos on their way to a 3-2 victory, when his long-range drive rocketed past Sergio Rico.

“Asensio gave a complete performance, not only for his goal,” the Coach said of the 20-year-old after the game.

“We’re happy for the trophy. Today we saw a great Sevilla side, so I don’t know if we’re the deserved winners.

“I made the decision [of not starting Luka Modric] because I didn’t think he was ready for 90 or 120 minutes.

“A player like Sergio [Ramos] always makes the difference. With only a little time left, I told him to go up a bit more and ultimately he was right where he needed to be.

“Asensio’s going to stay with us. That’s my plan [for him]. When he plays, he plays well and I’m happy with the work he’s done today.

“We have a dependable squad. If we can’t sign anyone then we won’t, but we have a very broad and good squad, with very experienced players and young players. The most important thing is the group.”
