Pique named Euros’ best Spaniard

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has been named Spain’s best player at Euro 2016 by the tournament’s official ranking system.

Pique finished highest out of the nine Spain players among the top 100 performers in the UEFA Euro 2016 Player Barometer, albeit in 31st place.

Andres Iniesta was considered La Roja’s second-best player in 33th, with Cesc Fabregas below him in 37th, despite criticism of the Chelsea midfielder’s displays.

Alvaro Morata (39), Sergio Ramos (53), David Silva (64), Nolito (83), Juanfran (86) and Jordi Alba (98) made up the Spanish contingent in the list.

Dimitri Payet finished as the competition’s best player, followed by Antoine Griezmann and Gareth Bale in second and third, while Cristiano Ronaldo was Portugal’s highest-placed performer in seventh.

UEFA’s Euro 2016 page states the Player Barometer “tracks players’ form in the build-up to and during the tournament” and “runs official player statistics through a specially designed algorithm to create rankings based on player performances”.
