Asensio: I want to play for Madrid

Marco Asensio is ready to prove his worth as a Real Madrid player after confirming he will join up with Los Blancos’ first team for preseason.

Asensio joined Madrid in December 2014 from Mallorca and spent last season on loan at Espanyol, a campaign which culminated in the attacker making his Spain debut in a pre-Euro 2016 friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

“I’ve always said that I want to be a Real Madrid player, and I’ll be with [Madrid] at the start of their training camp. Then we’ll decide [on my future],” the 20-year-old said upon receiving an award in his native Palma on Friday.

“I didn’t expect [my Spain call-up]. I’m very happy and hope to return [to the national team] soon.

“[On the struggles of his former club Mallorca], I’ve followed the team closely and spoken with several of their players.

“I’m surprised Mallorca are always fighting for survival [in La Segunda], when they should be in La Liga.”
