Jemez: I guess we’re down

Paco Jemez defends the Rayo Vallecano players but admits the team’s prospects of avoiding relegation are looking bleak.

Rayo lost 2-1 to Real Sociedad on Sunday and go into the last round of games, at home to already-relegated Levante, needing Sporting Gijon and Getafe to lose, against Villarreal and Real Betis respectively.

“We needed the best day to continue to rely on ourselves and we had our worst day of the season. I guess that means we’re in the Segunda. When you’re so bad on a definitive day, you can’t think of anything other than suffering,” he said after the match, Marca reports.

“As long as the maths doesn’t say otherwise, we’ll fight, but it’s complicated. It was essential we reach the final day depending on ourselves, and we’re not there. I feel sorry for the fans. The dressing room is very sad, with people crying like children. They’re great professionals who have worked hard. It’s on my head. The players can’t be blamed for anything.”
