Torres: Atleti deserved it

Fernando Torres felt Atletico Madrid were well worth their place in the Champions League Final after seeing off Bayern Munich.

The game on May 28 will be Atletico’s second final appearance in three years and after a 1-0 home win and a 2-1 away defeat, to progress on away goals, El Nino explained the team’s game plan to BT Sport.

“[The game was] very intense and we’re so proud of this team and this group of players and it’s fully deserved. We’ve beaten some of the best teams in Europe on the way to the final and now it’s one step closer, the dream we all have,” he said.

“Sometimes when you play a super team like Bayern you can’t play the game you want and in the first half we couldn’t find the way to press them high, to stop the transitions, they play so quick and in the end we took a step back. They created a lot of chances, they were in control and we suffered a lot.

“In the second half we wanted the opposite, try to press them really high, regain the ball, have counterattacks and that’s the way we got the goal. In the end it was similar to the first half. They pushed so much, we couldn’t handle them pressing high. The most important thing was the fans saw a really intense game. This is football.”
