Pedro Leon says he will “die” with Getafe in his blood after issuing a rallying cry to his struggling teammates ahead of Friday’s match against Eibar in La Liga.
A run of eight defeats in their last nine games has condemed El Geta to freefall, with the side comfortably in midtable at the turn of the year and now in the relegation zone, but the winger is ready to help the team end their slump, starting with the visit of Los Armeros.
“No-one imagined this could happen, not even us,” he told Marca.
“We were on a very good run and feeling good, and now the team have only picked up one point in nine games.
“Football is like that. It demands a lot of you to stop a losing run.
“Friday is paramount [in stopping our slump] and we must give everything against Eibar. It’s a very important game for our future. "
“[Our slump] is an accumulation of things, but we’re not thinking about the past, only the present.
“This match is very important because [a win] would end our slump, let us look at things differently and go for broke at Vallecas.
“We’ve had some very bad years together. In the end, we stopped the rot by uniting the dressing room.
“The club responded then, now it’s up to us to repeat those previous years.
“I expect a [Jose Luis] Mendilibar team. He gets the best from his players. I know that he’s very competitive as I had him at Valladolid.
“We don’t expect a relaxed Eibar. They’re practically safe, but we know they’re coming to win the game and it won’t be easy.
“Still, we’re at home with our fans and we have to win at any cost.
“There are four home games left, and I can only ask that everyone pulls together.
“We have to push, and we’ll leave our bodies behind to achieve the target of staying up.
“I have no complaints about the fans as they’ve been there and certainly against Eibar we need their support.
“I’ve felt very loved here and I’ve said many times that the club have always supported me.
“I carry the fans deep inside and I’m happy with them. I won’t claim to be a Getafe fan from small, but I’ve been here a long time.
“My children were born here and are Getafe fans. I wasn’t born Getafe but I shall die as one of them.”
