Galca: Difficult to compete

Constantin Galca praised the “efforts” of his Espanyol players during their 3-0 defeat to Real Betis but admitted their virus made it “difficult to compete”.

A bout of gastroenteritis prompted Espanyol to name a depleted team for the visit of Betis on Thursday, and they endured a difficult evening at Cornella-El Prat as goals from Ruben Castro, German Pezzella and Juan Vargas resoundingly ended the Catalans’ mini-resurgence.

“The players did enough. It’s difficult to compete like this,” the Coach said after the game.

“Without intensity, the team lose a lot, and we didn’t play with any [on Thursday].

“[Victor Sanchez] is the team’s No 1 exponent and he wasn’t involved, but I appreciate the effort of those who played, although our finish

“Losing is hard to take, but we must look at the circumstances. We didn’t make any contact with our opponents.

“The whole team only trained together once [in the week], neither were we clinical in front of goal, despite making a tremendous effort.”
