Galca to leave Espanyol

Espanyol have announced that Constantin Galca will vacate his role as Coach when his contract expires next month.

Galca replaced Sergio Gonzalez last December, with Espanyol only three points above the relegation zone in La Liga, and subsequently guided the club to a 13th-place finish.

However, Los Periquitos’ new Chinese owners – coupled with some heavy defeats and survival not being assured until the penultimate day of the campaign – have conspired against the Romanian and his assistants, whose contracts will expire on June 30 and will not be extended.

“RCD Espanyol thank them for their professionalism, dedication and meeting the targets set in the final stage of the season,” Espanyol added in a statement on their official website.

“In an admittedly-complicated campaign, Galca and his assistants reached the goal of keeping the first team in the top flight of Spanish football, while always demonstrating a firm commitment to the club.

“The club wish them every success in their professional endeavours and other sporting challenges that may confront them in the future.”

Galca is expected to be given the opportunity to bid farewell to Espanyol fans at a Press conference next week, with Paco Jemez and Quique Sanchez Flores the favourites to replace him.
