Neville: Banner crossed the line

Gary Neville was critical of an “inappropriate” banner aimed towards Valencia during their 4-0 win at Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on Thursday.

Los Che raced to a 4-0 victory in the second leg of their last-32 tie against the Austrians, earning them a 10-0 aggregate triumph to reach the round of 16 in the process, but the game at Ernst-Happel-Stadion was marred by an explicit banner about the club, which UEFA officials were forced to take down.

“[On the banners], we accept that football is about passion, but [the banner] crossed the line,” the Coach said after the game.

“We saw the banner and thought it was inappropriate, so we asked the UEFA officials, who acted fantastically, quickly and correctly, to have it taken down.

“Our fans were impeccable and magnificent at Mestalla, and so were the Rapid fans. They didn’t need to do those things.

“We had a good game, with clear ideas going forward, and caused the Rapid defence many problems.

“We have a great week ahead. The game against Espanyol gave us confidence.

“We believe in the game we’re trying to play and our work. I think the players have more confidence now and are happier.”
