‘Copa Final should be at best location’

Sports minister Miguel Cardenal wants the Copa del Rey to be held at the ‘best location’ after Santiago Bernabeu was suggested.

The game is likely to be between Barcelona and Sevilla, the former leading Valencia 7-0 from the first leg and the latter with a 4-0 advantage on Celta Vigo, and Real Madrid’s home was suggested as the site of the Final, but there is a question mark due to Barca’s involvement.

“On [the idea of] a fixed venue for Cup Finals I have to say that’s a matter to be decided by the Spanish Football Federation,” Mundo Deportivo quotes Cardenal, the head of the Sports Council [CSD] as saying.

“What I would say is the Final should be played in the best location, with greatest capacity and most comfort for fans.”

It has also been suggested, most recently by Jorge Perez, a candidate for the RFEF Presidency, that Camp Nou should once again host Spain fixtures.

“I’ve seen a national team game in Barcelona and it’s normal,” Cardenal said on the matter.

“There’s no great significance. Other teams have played other sports in Catalonia with great success, and there are big crowds for football.

“There’s no problem and soon the football team will play in Catalonia.”
