Masche: Barca weren’t superior

Javier Mascherano admitted Barcelona “weren’t superior” to Malaga on Saturday but praised his teammates for “showing character” in an eventual 2-1 win.

Goals from Munir El Haddadi and Lionel Messi earned La Blaugrana a hard-fought victory at La Rosaleda as they had to ride out a strong first-half display from the hosts, and the centre-back was grateful for the three points.

“We weren’t superior in the game,” he said after the game.

“Still, the team fought back and showed character because we would’ve lost if we didn’t.

“The best teams win, even when they play badly.

“We’ve taken this game as a warning ahead of our upcoming matches, but without going crazy because the team ultimately gave a good performance.

“In the dressing room at half-time, we spoke about a lack of precision [in our play] and avoiding unnecessary risks.

“We won thanks to our individual quality. The three points are very good and winning the game was vital.”
