Augusto Fernandez’s protracted move from Celta Vigo to Atletico Madrid is almost complete after he passed a medical on Thursday.
The 28-year-old left Celta Vigo’s 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday with tears in his eyes, and the Spanish Press have since caught him touching down at Adolfo Suarez airport, where he acknowledged cameramen with a smile.
“I’m very happy, but there are still some details to polish and I’m waiting for them to be resolved,” he said after the completion of his medical.
“The decision to play [against Athletic] was mine. I wanted to play and I did.”
Augusto, who has agreed a three-year contract with Atleti, will now return to Vigo, where he is due to hold a Press conference to announce his departure.
The switch marks the end of Augusto’s three-year spell with Celta, having joined them in 2012 from Velez Sarsfield.
However, with Celta owning only 50 percent of his economic rights, they also had to negotiate the player’s release with Velez.
Augusto arrives as a direct replacement for Tiago Mendes, who is not due back until the tail end of the season as he nurses a tibia fracture.
