Basques defeat Catalonia in friendly

Aritz Aduriz’s goal in the first half was enough for the Basque Country to defeat Catalonia 1-0 in Saturday’s annual friendly at Camp Nou.

Over 50,000 fans made their calls for independence known as the match marked 100 years since the first meeting between the two regions.

Despite La Liga restarting on Wednesday, many Catalan and Basque stars were in action, including Aduriz, Iker Muniain, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Barca new boy Aleix Vidal.

However, it was the striker who emerged with the winner just six minutes before half-time as he took down a lobbed through ball with his chest and smashed a finish past Pau Lopez.
