‘We tried to lift Cheryshev’s spirit’

Marcos Llorente, who played for Real Madrid against Cadiz in the Copa del Rey, said ineligible Denis Cheryshev was upset at the problems his appearance caused.

Cheryshev hadn’t served a one-game ban from last year’s competition, while on the books at Villarreal, and after Cadiz confirmed they would appeal his involvement in the match, Madrid are at risk of being kicked out of the tournament for fielding an ineligible player.

“He’s not good. It’s something strange that doesn’t happen often. It’s something the club has to solve and we wait to see what happens,” Llorente said, Marca reports.

“It’s something from a while back, a long time ago. [Cheryshev] didn’t think about it. He thought about playing well. The club has to find a solution.

“We’ve talked to him, tried to lift his spirit and tell him to be calm. It’s screwed up, for us, to play but not be eligible, but it’s always a pleasure to play and a source of pride to fight for this shirt.”
