Cardenal: Linesman allegation very serious

President of the Sports Council [CSD] Miguel Cardenal wants the assistant referee who alleged pressure to favour Real Madrid in the Clasico to come forward.

It was on Thursday reported that an unnamed assistant referee had contacted police and anticorruption authorities with the claim that a member of the Referees Technical Committee had tried to sway the officials in November’s Clasico against Barcelona.

“I think this is a very serious allegation, something extremely alarming. The charge needs to be clarified as soon as possible and take appropriate action, if necessary,” Cardenal said, AS reports.

“I hope the Spanish Football Federation [RFEF] immediately clarify what is behind this accusation.”

The official concerned has thus far remained anonymous, said to be out of fear of professional reprisals, and Cardenal added that if he did come forward, he would have the support of a range of institutions.

“Nobody in 2015 in Spain should have to fear retaliation. He would have at his disposal the administration, the government, the Sports Council and the judiciary,” he explained.

“Should he say what has happened, and make it known to the sports authorities, it would be taken completely seriously.

“[The matter should be shared] so there can be serious look into this grave accusation and public opinion can know the facts of the issue it is talking about. It can’t be done in a manner that impedes the authorities.”

Jose Angel Jimenez Munoz de Morales was named as the Referees Committee member alleged to have made a phone call pressuring the officials into favouring Madrid.
