Tebas: Villar must be crafty or dumb…

La Liga President Javier Tebas questioned the role of Spanish Football Federation [RFEF] counterpart Angel Maria Villar in the scandals engulfing UEFA and FIFA.

Villar, who is not accused of any criminality or other breaches, is a senior Vice-President at the organisation and was in line to step in for President Michel Platini when he was suspended by FIFA.

Tebas, speaking as the LFP announced a sponsorship deal with Mazda, wondered aloud why Villar wasn’t aware of any alleged wrong-doing.

“Villar is a member of the Executive Committee. And while some of them are in jail and some are suspended, there’s two or three to whom nothing happens,” he said, AS reports.

“Either Villar is very, very crafty, or very, very dumb, to have not heard about anything. I can’t say any more than that.

“I don’t even speak about what he does with the Federation. I don’t think it would be good if Villar became President of UEFA. It’s not suitable for the Federation to be something else.”

Tebas was also asked about the so-called ‘FIFA virus’ that afflicts Spanish clubs – that is players returning injured from international duty.

“It’s an eternal problem for the Leagues. It’s not been seriously addressed,” he lamented.

“We have to find a solution. The clubs are concerned but to find a solution we need to further the changes in the institutions. There have to be changes but I don’t know what they are.”
