‘Madrid will improve under Benitez’

Alvaro Arbeloa believes Rafa Benitez will improve Real Madrid to the extent that the side will regain their winning habit.

The 55-year-old played a key role in the right-back's development, having signed him for Liverpool in 2007 before he returned to Los Blancos two years later.

“We know it'll be very difficult and that the demands are great, but the club can't afford anything other than to aim for every trophy,” he told Madrid's official website.

“Rafa [Benitez]'s a very methodical, hard-working and demanding Coach, who's assured us that we'll do better and better through hard work and effort. He's had a very good start.

“Rafa is perhaps the Coach who has left the biggest mark on my career, not just for giving me the opportunity of playing for a club like Liverpool, who are special and – at the time – were a very important club, who always fought for the Premier League and Champions League.

“Not only did he give me that opportunity, which allowed me to play with the national team, but – most importantly – he helped me get to Real Madrid.

“My only motivation is winning. I want to win every game we play, even the ones in training.

“I think my ambition goes hand-in-hand with this badge, and every Madrid player needs to have it.”
