Madrid appoint Fernandez

Real Madrid have officially appointed Victor Fernandez as director of their youth teams after months of speculation.

In a statement on Los Blancos' official website, among the 54-year-old's responsibilities are the “training, direction and coordination of all youth categories, plus national and international recruitment of youth players”.

Fernandez completes a technical committee of sporting director Ramon Martinez, head of recruitment Jose Antonio Calafat and general manager Jose Angel Sanchez, specifically assembled to oversee youth development.

Madrid have also confirmed that the body will work “synonymously” with the first team's equivalent of Martinez, Sanchez and Rafa Benitez.

Fernandez has plenty of top-level experience in management, coaching the likes of Real Zaragoza, Real Betis, Porto and – most recently – Deportivo La Coruna.
