Real Madrid legend Jorge Valdano described as ‘regrettable’ the ‘humiliation’ of the whistles directed at Barcelona defender Gerard Pique when playing for Spain.
Pique has been targeted in recent appearances for the national team, with Sergio Ramos suggesting after the win over Macedonia that Pique’s comments in celebrating recent Barca success are the cause. It’s also been suggested that Pique’s pro-Catalan stance is a factor.
“This is a game that is a bit sectarian, where it’s necessary to hate your rival,” Valdano said, Marca reports, as Bein Sports launched their Champions League coverage.
“Pique’s paid the consequences as he is someone who is committed to the truth. It’s regrettable to me, that they humiliate a player who has given a lot to the national team.”
