Juan Mata admits Spain's 1-0 win against Macedonia in Euro 2016 qualifying on Tuesday “wasn't the prettiest game” but hailed his side for pulling through.
The Manchester United attacker scored a memorable winner for La Roja in their Group C clash, lobbing Tome Pacovski with a cross which was intended for the far post yet creeped over the opposing goalkeeper and into the roof of his net.
“[The victory] demanded a lot of us. We knew they were going to press, but they were also aggressive and played with intensity,” he said after the game.
“It wasn't the prettiest game but we did our homework and are now very close to qualifying.
“[On his goal], I tried to pick out the far post. It was one of those goals which only happen every once in a while.
“[David de Gea] didn't have much to do. He's very calm, focused and eager to do his job. He's very professional.”
