Mallorca sign Wellenreuther

Mallorca have pulled off something of a coup by landing Schalke goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old, who started both legs of Schalke’s dramatic Champions League round-of-16 tie with Real Madrid last season, is Albert Ferrer’s first signing since being appointed Coach.

However, it is understood that the move was wrapped up by the islanders’ German President Utz Claassen and sporting director Miguel Angel Nadal.

Speaking to Mallorca’s official website, Classen remarked of his new recruit: “He fits perfectly into Mallorca’s international project.

“He was Schalke’s second-choice goalkeeper and I must thank [Schalke] for lending him to us.

“It’s not easy for a Segunda club to sign an Under-20 international footballer.”

Nadal added: “He’s come here to give everything. He’s young, strong, has good feet and hopes to succeed with us.”

Wellenreuther, a Germany Under-20 international, will compete with Jesus Cabrero and Ruben Mino for a place between the sticks.
