Modric on ‘very difficult’ season

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has admitted that he endured a “very difficult” 2014-15 campaign, which was ultimately plagued by injuries.

The Croatian enjoyed a strong start to the season, before a serious hamstring injury in November, sustained while on international duty, kept him out until March.

He then managed to return for six matches, only for a knee ligament problem against Malaga in April to end his campaign prematurely.

“It was terribly difficult not being able to help Real Madrid in the Champions League,” he told Sportske Novosti ahead of his country’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy in Split.

“I missed key matches, but what can you do? It’s onwards and upwards.

“Last season was very difficult. I had some great spells with Madrid and Croatia but also a lot of bad luck with injuries.

“I’m feeling better now but not fit enough to play yet. I’ll be there, spurring the national team on, and I think my teammates will get a good result.

UEFA have ordered the Croatian national team to play behind closed doors against Italy following racist chanting and the use of flares and fireworks in previous matches, along with a 55,000 fine.
