Carvajal: It was hard for the ref

Dani Carvajal believes referee Milorad Mazic had a hard game to call between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

The Champions League quarter-final ended goalless but there were moments of controversy involving Mario Mandzukic, Sergio Ramos and Carvajal himself, who appeared to strike the Atletico forward.

“It’s difficult for the referee in these games,” the right-back said, AS reports.

“With the tension that was generated, he was good, I congratulate him from here.

“We were the better team in the first half but we couldn’t be in the second. The pitch didn’t help.

“It can’t be 0-0 at the Bernabeu. It’ll be decided there.”

It was put to Carvajal that Mario Suarez – like Marcelo shown a yellow card that rules him out of the return – described the official as ‘very bad.’

“That’s his opinion. He got decisions right and wrong, for both sides,” Carvajal replied.

“Marcelo’s card shouldn’t have been shown and that’s a suspension, for example.

“I don’t think we’re favourites. We’re level with Atletico, who are a very tough team.

“We called for the fans to be a 12th man and take us to the semi-final. We’ll give everything. It will be a great game with a great support and they are fundamental.”
