Carvajal: ‘Atleti tie will be special’

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal insists the Champions League tie against cross-city rivals Atletico Madrid is going to be something special.

The pair go head-to-head in their first-leg quarter-final clash at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday and Carvajal feels it could turn into a momentous occasion after the teams met in last year’s final.

From Atletico's point of view this is an opportunity for revenge as they were so close to winning it last season, but in the end it was us celebrating. So this could be a special tie because of that final last year,” Carvajal told UEFA.com.

“We’ve faced them a few times already this season but now it's a knockout match and it will be different. I think the Champions League is something special, which changes the approach a bit.

“It will be very special, a difficult tie, and both teams will be trying their best to progress. We’ve both have had highs and lows with injuries but that’s normal in football because you never have exactly the same players facing each other.

“However, I think the teams are going into this tie in good form. We’ve played well in our last two or three games and they have also been doing well.

“They are third in the table and have got a lot of points, so it will be an exciting but difficult tie,” he added.
