Varane accepts Madrid challenge

Raphael Varane says he is determined to make his mark at Real Madrid after failing to cement a regular place in the starting line-up this term.

The 21-year-old central defender has struggled for playing time this season, starting just 14 La Liga games, but is adamant it is during the difficult times that you learn about yourself.

“I’ve played less this term with Madrid but more regularly with France, which has helped me not to lose rhythm,” he told La Voix du Nord.

“I’ve had more of a role to play in the second half of the campaign but that was when the team was going through a sticky spell.

“However, it’s during the tough times you learn most about yourself because every day as a Real Madrid player is a challenge.

“That’s certainly been the case with me and I need to set myself high standards to become a better player,” maintained Varane, who is expected to start for France in their friendly with Brazil in Paris on Thursday.
