Pique: ‘I couldn’t play for Madrid’

Barcelona central defender Gerard Pique has admitted that he could never put on the white shirt of eternal rivals Real Madrid.

The Spain international says that when he was with Manchester United earlier in his career there was some talk of him going to the Santiago Bernabeu, but concedes he was happy in England at the time.

“Could I have joined Real Madrid in the past? In the end you can never say never but I’m very much a Cule and couldn’t have worn a Madrid shirt,” Pique told El Larguero.

“Real Madrid is a great club and it’s the dream of many players to play there, but to me playing for Barcelona is the best.

“There were some comments made about me signing for Madrid but [at the time] I was happy at United.”

The 28-year-old also gave his take on last Sunday’s 2-1 defeat of Real Madrid in the Clasico at the Camp Nou.

“The break came at a good time for us because Madrid were controlling the first half. In a Clasico everything is unpredictable.

“In the opening 45 minutes we struggled but in the second half, after Luis Suarez scored, it helped us do enough to win the game.

“Real Madrid have spent years looking to play on the counter-attack and in the second half it was end-to-end.

“In these kind of matches the defenders are the heroes or the villains and we played a good game. I’m happy for the team.

“We are on a good run, apart from the game against Malaga, and are competing for every trophy,” added Pique.
