Tabarez: Suarez adapting quickly

Uruguay Coach Oscar Tabarez believes Luis Suarez has made rapid progress as he adjusts to the style of football at Barcelona.

Suarez moved to Camp Nou from Liverpool after the World Cup last year and Tabarez has told reporters he fully expected the forward to need time to settle in.

“I knew Luis would need time to adapt because [with Uruguay] he is given greater freedom of space,” Tabarez said.

“We favour a game where he is one-on-one and if he loses the ball, it doesn’t affect the team or him.

“It’s different in Barcelona. But Suarez has started to adapt to a team that has a way of playing that peaked with Pep Guardiola but continues. It’s a proposal based on position and possession.

“I was happy he joined Barcelona, who will give him a whole football structure and culture, which is amazing.

“It was something with a little logic [that Suarez initially struggled for goals] but I saw many signs of Luis adapting very quickly.

“He has progressed and I think he has increased his potential as a player who will help Uruguay when he is allowed to play.”
