Vermaelen up and running

Long-term injury victim Thomas Vermaelen has stepped up the latest phase of his recovery and is back running under the eye of a Barcelona physiotherapist.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Vermaelen, signed in the summer from Arsenal and yet to make a competitive appearance for Barca, has been undergoing sessions at Carretera de las Aigues, a popular destination for athletes both professional and amateur.

The Belgium international is working under the supervision of Xavi Linde and is making such progress that it’s speculated he could appear for Luis Enrique in the final stretch of the season after a December hamstring operation.

Douglas, another summer signing who has had injury problems, is due to return to training on Wednesday, a hamstring injury having kept him out of action for a month.
